Counseling Research Guide

This Research Guide is intended to introduce information resources pertaining to counseling psychology and counseling ministry for students in the Counseling programs.  For questions contact the Counseling Librarian Trisha Compton at tcompton@tiu.edu or (847) 317-4009.

Searching and Browsing for Books

Use the subject search in TrinCat to search for books in Rolfing Library, in I-Share to search for books in 76 Illinois academic libraries or in WorldCat to search nationally for books not in Rolfing or other Illinois academic libraries.  Begin with some basic keyword searches (any word, anywhere), using natural language combining a few terms that relate to your topic, for example multicultural counseling.   Results from your keyword searches will help to identify appropriate Library of Congress (LC) subject headings for more relevant and specific material.  For instance, the LC subject heading for "multicultural counseling" is "Cross-Cultural Counseling."   For very relevant and specific materials concerning multicultural counseling do a subject search using the LC subject heading "Cross-Cultural Counseling."

If you would rather browse through books in the library, be aware that counseling and psychology books are scattered throughout the Library. These Library of Congress call number ranges will guide you in finding areas with relevant books. When you find a good book on a topic, the ones near it on the shelf will probably be similar in subject. To find out on where the books are located, check the collection map located at the reference opacs and throughout the library. Recently acquired materials in counseling and psychology at Rolfing are periodically posted to the new books page.
