    About the Symphonic Band

Trinity College has a 41-year history of band music. The original pep band assembled to play at athletic events grew into a concert organization in 1970, and began touring nationally in 1976; this phase of the band's history culminated in a 1990 South American tour. Today's Symphonic Band is the product of a rebirth nine years ago under the dynamic direction of Dr. Thomas Hunt, who directed its first European tour in 1998. Its core repertoire consists of the classics of concert band literature, including original pieces for band and skillful transcriptions and arrangements. The Symphonic Band welcomes music and non-music majors, and many band members take private lessons at Trinity.

    Our Conductor, Stephen Posegate

The School of Music is delighted to welcome Mr. Stephen Posegate as Assistant Professor of Music. Beginning this fall, Mr. Posegate will teach music education subjects and supervise student teachers, and he will be the new permanent director of the Symphonic Band.

Mr. Posegate is eminently qualified to mentor future music teachers at Trinity. After graduating from Wheaton College in 1976 (BME), he taught music for over twenty years in Denali, Nenana, and Anchorage, Alaska, where he also founded and conducted the Anchorage Civic Orchestra, taught music education subjects at the University of Alaska/Anchorage, and completed an MEd degree in Public School Administration (also at UA/A). He earned an MM degree in Music Composition from Indiana University in 2000, and is presently a Graduate Teaching Fellow (supervising student music teachers) at The University of Oregon School of Music, where he is completing doctoral studies (DMA) in Music Education with Wind Ensemble Conducting as a secondary area.

Steve writes: "I am eager to teach in a Christian college environment. After twenty-five years in public and state educational systems, I am ready to teach in a place where my Christian faith can be a natural part of everyday professional life. And Trinity has a good reputation within the Christian college community; I am sure this is where God wants me." We are sure, as well, that Steve is the person for whom we've been waiting to fill this longstanding vacancy, and we are delighting in God's gracious provision.

    Recordings

The Symphonic Band's newest CD (containing several items from the tour concert repertoire) is a collection of musical reflections on time and how we use it. Entitled Time and Time Again, its contents—by composers as diverse as J.S. Bach, Paul Hindemith, and Mark Camphouse—challenge us to think again about how we either use time or lose it, and how what we do with the time God has bequeathed to us matters—not just now, but for all eternity.

The Symphonic Band's previous CD, Pictures, features Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Gould's Jericho Rhapsody, and several other works for symphonic band.
